Julee Cruise's once described herself as a "belter," a Broadway baby who one day found herself to be the unlikely vehicle for David Lynch's musical fantasies. Her real voice wasn't all that ethereal in the first place but she still managed to approximate the sound of the Paris Sisters and the Fleetwoods for Lynch and film composer Angelo Badalamenti on two beautifully decadent pop albums, FLOATING INTO THE NIGHT and its neglected followup, THE VOICE OF LOVE. The material and sound are somewhat more varied on LOVE. For one thing, there's a little more surface humor ("Kool Kat Walk") here than was evident on the gothic NIGHT. "Up In Flames" was first recorded by Koko Taylor on the WILD AT HEART soundtrack but Cruise's "white" version is just as eerie.
